South Pacific

Why see South Pacific?

The Rodgers and Hammerstein Classic!

It's World War II, and love that challenges society's racial standards takes place on a tropical island in the South Pacific in this beloved production of the classic, presented by The Muny for the first time since 2013! An American nurse falls for a French plantation owner but has difficulties coming to terms with his mixed-race children, while a U.S. lieutenant and a Tonkinese woman have to contemplate the consequences of possibly getting married.

What Is The Story of South Pacific?

As poignant today as it was during its first Broadway run in 1949, the critically acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning musical was bolstered by critical acclaim and box-office success, becoming the second-longest-running production on the Great White Way (at the time). Now songbook standards, tunes like Bali Ha'i and I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair punctuate the tropical tale about the war-torn prejudice and romance that blossoms between U.S Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile De Becque. When Nellie discovers Emile has two mixed-race children, she must decide if her judgment of Emile outweighs her deep love for him.

This was the first time I've seen South Pacific on stage and although I'd like to see it again to compare I thought it was very good. The singing was very good, and I have to say the children in the play were fantastic. It had it's good points and bad. I myself didn't care for the smoking, didn't think it was needed, nor the nudity but I think we all need to remember this is not the movie and for how it was presented it was very nicely done. I've seen the movie with Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Bazzi 20 times and have to remember they simply just can't be duplicated. The people who performed last night gave it their all and I would recommend seeing this play, just remember they simply can't bring the South Pacific on stage and to compare it with the movie as I found myself doing only made me realize I was not giving credit where credit was due. ...
