Why see Hairspray?
THE INFECTIOUS MUSICAL RETURNS TO MUNY!
John Waters' darkly comic and sassy musical returns to St Louis in a brand-new production staged by Muny for the first time in six years! Follow the coming of age of roly-poly aspiring pop star Tracy Turnblad as she fights for equality in civil-rights' era Baltimore, discovering her first love, and of course shaking it down on the Corny Collin's show. Hairspray is based on the 1988 movie that shot Ricki Lake to fame, and features incredible dance numbers and a blazing set of show tunes including "You Can't Stop The Beat" and "Let 'em Tell That" and is a breezy, infectious show that will have you dancing in the street afterwards.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Tracy Turnblad has one dream; to dance on local tv's Corny Collins Show and be crowned Miss Hairspray. However she faces opposition from the bitchy, beautiful Amber and her prejudiced, nefarious mother, who is determined to hand Amber the crown no matter what. As Tracy grows in confidence, she makes new friends with the black students in her class and supports their desire to dance as equals on the same show; however, Amber's mother deeply supports segregation and is determined to foil this plan. As Miss Hairspray draws closer, will Tracy and her friends succeed in overcoming prejudice? And will she ever lock lips with the gorgeous lead dancer Link Larkin? This is one show that will leave you heady and uplifted, with plenty of awesome show tunes to tap along to, long after the curtain falls.
