Fiddler on the Roof

Why see Fiddler on the Roof?

If I were a rich man...

It's 1905 and Russia is changing all around Tevye and his family. From Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stien, Fiddler on the Roof is the story of how standing by our values and religious traditions sometimes means changing the way we look at the entire world.

Based on the novel by Sholem Aleichem, Fiddler on Roof first premiered on Broadway in 1964, before going on to be adapted into an eight-time Academy Award-nominated movie. Since then it has become a standard of American musical theatre, and the hilarious story elicits positive responses wherever it is played.

What is the story?

At the turn of the 20th Century, Russia is a country on the brink of revolution. Although the chaos seems to seldom touch the isolated family of Tevye the Milkman, he sees the effect on his three elder daughters and the lives that they choose the lead.

Tzeitel, the oldest has little prospects for a poor woman, when the widowed and ancient butcher Lazar Wolf shows interest in her whilst she pines for the poor tailor Motel, it begins a story of rebellion, violence, love and acceptance that finds Tevye and the family learning to leave behind their old lives and start a new one full of hope and laughter!

Always a favorite

Overall I loved the production. I saw it at the Fox Theater in St Louis last night. The opening number was magnificent as was the dream sequence. The singing of the main characters was very good particularly the performer who played Hodel. I did, however, wish they had mixed more volume and bass in the male leads. I was disappointed in the bar scene as I did not feel that the costumes or choreography made it very clear that there were the distinctly two factions of townspeople participating. I also felt like they should have done a bit of padding in the Golde costume and made her look a bit older. Set design was good albeit a bit distracting with so many chorus characters constantly moving trees, etc while other dialogue is going on. Orchestration was wonderful as always with the Fox orchestra. ... Read more

ASTONISHING PERFORMANCE

I was immediately transformed back in history with the opening act. The performances were amazing; the acting, singing and total performances were perfect. The live orchestra perfect on ques and brought the play line to an astonishing level. This is the best production I have attended in many years. Thank you to everyone, those seen onstage, and those off stage, who made this remarkable tight happen. I did not want the experience to stop!!!!! ... Read more
