EXQUISITE SCORE, EXQUISITE MUSIC, EXQUISITE PERFORMANCE
"An American in Paris" is one more movie I'll never be able to watch after hearing the St. Louis Symphony perform the musical score to the accompanying film. Forget the most expensive surround sound system you might acquire, without the SLSO accompanying the movie it will always be just a pale reminder of how wonderful the Gershwin's compositions can be. An interesting decision was to leave the original movie recorded piano performances by Oscar Levant in lieu of a live pianist. Levant's furious keyboard work as filmed would have been difficult, if not impossible, to synchronize. The orchestra's performance is, of course, constrained by synchronizing with the movie. Nonetheless, it was done seamlessly and so beautifully. Might I say I was breathless on occasion? An this might be a bit heretical, but I think the music as performed upstaged Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron's dancing. What a great way to spend Mother's Day Eve in 2018!
