MUNY'S FIRST PRODUCTION SINCE 2007 - A WELCOME RETURN!
A firm Rodgers and Hammerstein favorite amongst theater-goers, this is also the musical that launched Hugh Jackman to stage super-stardom! The first performance at the Muny since 2007, the first of the duo's musicals opened on Broadway in 1943 to rave reviews and an unprecedented sell-out. Much like the earlier Showboat, Oklahoma used songs in order to convey emotion amidst a solid storyline of love and betrayal, rather than laughter, changing the concept of the musical for Broadway and America forever.
Set in Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906, it tells the story of happy-go-lucky cowboy Curly McLain and his budding romance with farm girl Laurey Williams. However, Laurey has also attracted the attentions of another; the disturbed, lonely farmhand, Jud Fry. A secondary romance follows the exploits of cowboy Will Parker and his flirtatious fiancee, Ado Annie.
Laurey must decide between Curly and Jud, where her decision leads to tragic consequences for one of them. This lively musical features popular standards including Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin', Lonely Room and All Er Nothin', and of course, Oklahoma.
