The 2004 Broadway musical Muny premiere
Hello Mama! The King of Rock 'n' Roll gets his own stage musical treatment in this heady mash-up of both his biggest hits and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Set during his heyday of the Fifties, the 2004 jukebox musical first premiered on Broadway, winning the 2005 Theatre World Award for lead Cheyenne Jackson. The arrival of a broody, sexy ex-con called Chad in a sleepy dreary MidWestern town turns lives upside down and hearts aflame, setting off a chain of events that will change them forever, and all to the sounds of Elvis' biggest hit songs including (You're The) Devil in Disguise, All Shook Up, Blue Suede Shoes, Burning Love, and C'mon Everybody!
Shakespearean chaos in the Mid West
With more than a subtle nod to Footloose, the town is ruled under an iron rod by the Mamie Eisenhower Decency Act, outlawing "Loud music, public necking, and tight pants" and enforced by the prudish mayor Matilda. With Chad encouraging the young folk of the town to rebel against the status quo, crushes turn into full-on passion, with couples springing up all over the place. However, lovelorn mechanic Natalie must contend with the rest of the townswomen for the attentions of Chad; in a last ditch attempt to gain his affection, she disguises herself as a young male biker and acts as his new sidekick, Ed. However, as Natalie/Ed struggles to keep her new identity under wraps, she finds that her Natalie persona has inflamed the passions of another young man. Will she get the man of her dreams?
