Returning to the Muny!
Back at The Muny for the first time in seven years, the Tony Award-winning musical 42nd Street pays tribute to a bygone age in musical theater as we follow the efforts of a pushy director (Shrek's Shuler Hensley) attempting to stage a full-blown Broadway show in the throes of the Great Depression. Considered to be one of the most popular shows in recent decades, this meta-musical explores the myriad relationships between cast and crew that can make - or break - a Broadway hit.
Following the cast gearing up for a brand-new musical, we meet Peggy, an aspiring chorus girl who, fresh off the bus, is determined to make it on Broadway. However, she faces competition from the theater's own star Dorothy, opposition from the megalomanic director Julian and unwanted advances from Billy, one of the leads. After a disastrous opening night where she crashes into Dorothy on-stage, she is fired on the spot; however Julian takes pity on her, and needing a lead actress, convinces her to stay. Will Peggy regain her nerve and become a big star? And will Julian come to terms with his growing feelings for her? All will be revealed in this homage to backstage Broadway.
